The American frontier, also known as the Wild West, is a setting that sparked the imagination of people all around the world for decades. Unsurprisingly, this lead to the creation of many movies based around this time period and even gave birth to an entirely new film genre known as the western. Hollywood still produces westerns to this day, however, most of the best ones were created between the 40’s and the 70’s. Because of their age, it can be hard to find physical copies of these movies nowadays but luckily there are many free western movies on YouTube that you can even download if you have the right tool.

Regardless of how far she runs, however, her nemesis known simply as The Reverend (played by Guy Pearce) is always just one step away from capturing her.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

This should be one of the first western movies to watch on YouTube if you want to get a taste of how films were made back in the 60’s. The movie stars legendary actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the titular pair of outlaws. You have train robbers, horseback chases, and a daring escape across the border. In short, the classic ingredients for any good western movie.

Gone Are the Days (2018)

You’ll be hard pressed to find a whole lot of western movies on YouTube from 2018 but this one is a rare exception. Gone Are the Days tells the story of Taylon Flynn, a notorious outlaw played by Lance Henriksen. Flynn is old and doesn’t see much reason to continue living but he finds new hope when he encounters his estranged daughter.

Lone Star (1996)

One of the best western movies on YouTube from the 90’s, Lone Star tells the story of a Texas sheriff’s quest to find a murderer. Lone Star is part western part mystery so it’s a bit different compared to most other entries on this list. Still worth watching, though.

True Grit (2010)

One of the most recent western movies available on YouTube, True Grit is a remake of the 1969 movie of the same name. It’s rare to see a remake that’s better than the original, if only by a small margin, but it does happen occasionally. The story is virtually the same, with Jeff Bridges playing the role of a U.S. Marshal helping a teenage girl find her father’s murderer.

The Rider (2017)

Likely the best western movie on YouTube from 2017, The Rider follows young Brady Blackburn on his quest to learn what it means to be a cowboy. Blackburn is no stranger to the ways of the cowboy but forgets everything he knew after a near-fatal head injury and must now start almost from scratch.

The Wild Bunch (1969)

The movie follows a group of western outlaws in 1913 that are hanging on to the old ways while the world around them changes at a rapid pace. Pretty much any Clint Eastwood western movie can be considered a classic but this one really takes the cake. The fact that it also stars Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris should be reason enough to check it out on YouTube. But if that’s not enough, it’s worth noting that Unforgiven won no less than 4 Oscars among dozens of other awards.

The Dark Tower (2017)

The Dark Tower is one of the most unusual western movies on YouTube from 2017 but there’s a reason for that. The movie is based on the series of the novels of the same name written by Stephen King so there are plenty of action and fantasy elements to go along with the western theme. The movie isn’t the best Stephen King adaptation we’ve ever seen but it’s pretty good at what it does.

Rio Bravo (1959)

Sheriff John T. Chance played by John Wayne enlists the help of a group of misfits in order to prevent a bad guy from escaping prison. A major selling point of this movie is that it also features the legendary Dean Martin as one of the main characters.

The Searchers (1956)

Hands down one of the best western movies on YouTube starring John Wayne. This is in no small part thanks to the great actor’s monumental performance as the anti-hero Ethan Edwards. Wayne is well known for his heroic roles so it’s unusual to see him as an anti-hero but he pulls it off beautifully.

Django Unchained (2012)

Very few YouTube western movies can even come close to the quality of Django Unchained. This modern western masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino won two Oscars and countless other awards.
