Does Libby Work Offline? Books, Audiobooks, and Fixes

Libby works offline in its mobile app after a borrowed title has finished downloading. The web reader at libbyapp.com still needs an internet connection. The most dependable way to use Libby without internet is to download each loan in the mobile app and confirm that it is ready before you travel.

For readers preparing a book or audiobook for a flight, the important distinction is not just whether a title appears on your Shelf, but whether it has fully downloaded, remains within its loan period, and opens in the app before service drops. Libby Audiobooks Work Offline After Download

For ordinary travel listening, the Libby mobile app is the supported starting point: borrow the audiobook, let the download finish, and open it once before you lose service. This route stays within Libby, so it is not intended for browser-only listening or use in a separate audio player.

Download Audiobooks in the Libby App

Prerequisites: install the Libby mobile app, sign in with an active library card, borrow an available audiobook, and connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data long enough for the download to finish.

Step 1: Install the Libby app on your device

First, make sure you've installed the official Libby app on your iOS, Android, or tablet device and signed in with your library card. Libby is the modern app from OverDrive that connects you with your library's digital collection of ebooks and audiobooks for free.

Step 2: Search for and borrow an audiobook

Browse or search in the Libby app to find an audiobook you want to listen to, then tap the Borrow button. Once borrowed, the audiobook will appear on your Shelf.

Step 3: Download the Libby audiobook

Go to your Shelf and allow the audiobook to download using your chosen settings. If it does not begin automatically, use the download icon. Confirm that the title is fully downloaded before leaving service.

Step 4: Listen to libby audiobooks offline

After the download finishes, play a few seconds in the Libby app before your trip. A completed download can play without internet, subject to the active loan period.

For most travelers, I would keep this supported mobile route as the default because it lets you confirm playback, chapter position, and loan status in the same app you will use on the trip.

Firefox Downloader: Verify Before Use

Libby Downloader is an unofficial Firefox community extension, not part of Libby’s supported offline feature. Its latest public release was version 0.6.0 on April 28, 2024, and its current compatibility and security are not established here. The official Libby app remains the appropriate choice for ordinary offline listening; readers considering a community extension should independently assess whether it is maintained and appropriate for their situation.

Maintenance note

The project’s release history on GitHub shows its last public release. Do not treat the older Firefox requirement or the screenshots below as confirmation that the extension currently works with Libby.

Why this is not the default route

Browser access itself requires internet, and an unofficial add-on can change independently of Libby. It is not a substitute for downloading a loan in the Libby mobile app before travel.

Offline Options for Libby Ebooks

For most Libby ebooks, start with the mobile app: download the loan, confirm its status on your Shelf, and open it before you travel. Eligible titles can also work through Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) or supported built-in library features on compatible eReaders.

The official path should remain the default for an ordinary loan because it follows the library’s lending period and keeps reading, progress, and borrowing in one place. The options below move from mobile reading to compatible computer and eReader use, followed by an optional local-file discussion for readers with a specific authorized need.

Download Ebooks on iPhone and Android

Step 1: Sign into Libby and borrow your titles

Open the Libby app, sign in with your library card, and browse the catalog. Tap Borrow on the ebook or audiobook you want. Once borrowed, the title appears on your Shelf, which is where Libby manages both online and offline content. Offline reading and listening only work through the mobile app, not in a web browser.

Step 2: Check your download settings

Before you leave a Wi-Fi network, open Settings > Downloads and review how Libby handles downloads. By default, Libby automatically downloads ebooks when you borrow them over Wi-Fi. You can also choose whether you want Libby to download titles automatically or limit downloads by file size.

Step 3: Confirm your titles are fully downloaded

Go back to your Shelf > Loans and check the icons next to your books. A checkmark means the title is downloaded to your device and ready for offline use, while a cloud icon means it still needs to be downloaded. Always wait for the checkmark before switching to airplane mode or going offline.

Step 4: Read Libby books offline via Libby APP

Once your title shows a checkmark, tap the cover on your Shelf to read without an internet connection. A cloud icon means the title has not finished downloading. Offline access follows the normal loan period, and the web reader remains online-only.

Use ADE on a Computer or eReader

Step 1: Access Libby and Sign In

Open your web browser and go to libbyapp.com. Choose your local library and sign in with your library card credentials. Once logged in, your account will sync across devices and show you your borrowed titles on the Shelf. 

Step 2: Search for and Borrow a Title

Use the catalog search to find the ebook you want. Click Borrow to add it to your loans. If a title is currently unavailable, use Place Hold to join the waitlist. Once borrowed, the book remains on your Shelf until the loan period expires. 

Step 3: Download the eBook as a .acsm File

On your Shelf, select Read With… next to the borrowed book. Choose Other Options..., then pick EPUB or PDF (availability varies by title). This will download an .acsm file, which is a small license file used by ADE to fetch the actual ebook content. 

Step 4: Read Your Libby Books Offline in ADE

ADE can suit eligible ebooks and compatible non-Kindle eReaders, but title availability and library options vary. Some newer Kobo models also provide a built-in OverDrive library workflow for supported loans, so Kobo users may not need an ACSM transfer. To open an eligible ACSM download in ADE:

1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions from the official Adobe website (free for Windows and macOS). 
2. Launch ADE and authorize your computer using your Adobe ID (Help > Authorize Computer). If you don't have an Adobe ID, you can create one for free. 
3. Find the .acsm file in your Downloads folder and double-click it or drag it into ADE. ADE will then download the full EPUB or PDF and add it to your ADE library. 
4. Once the download completes, you can read the ebook offline in ADE anytime without an internet connection. 

BookFab for an Authorized Local-File Workflow

For content you have legally obtained and are authorized to access, a local-file workflow may be relevant where permitted by platform terms and applicable law. This is not necessary for most Libby loans: the Libby app, ADE, and compatible built-in eReader options should be considered first.

BookFab Kindle Converter is a Windows tool for Amazon Kindle ebooks that can export supported local titles to EPUB or PDF and retain key metadata such as the cover, title, and author where supported. It may suit readers who need to organize authorized local Kindle files in a personal library; readers who simply want to finish a borrowed Libby title offline should stay with Libby or ADE.

Optional local-file preparation

Some eligible library ebooks offer Kindle delivery through the library’s Read With... option. Availability depends on the title, library, and account region. A Kindle-delivered loan still follows its normal lending terms.

Local Kindle files
