Plot:
Gary Valentine and Alana Kane have been friends since they were kids. They both work in the San Fernando Valley in California. During one of their excursions, they strike up a conversation on the way to the school gym. After some initial flirting, Gary and Alana become interested in each other. But their relationship is complicated by Gary's part-time work as an actor in Hollywood. Their relationship is further complicated by their respective age differences. They play a love story that is unusual for its time.
If you're looking for a surprisingly compelling and romantic movie that is also a bit old-fashioned, then check out Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza". It's a classic coming of age story about a boy (Bradley Cooper) who falls in love with a young woman (Alana Haim) while trying to impress her older, more successful friends.
Like many of Anderson's films, this one is about a character who spends his early years living on the outskirts of Hollywood. But he's not the typical movie character, because Gary is a teenager and not a full-fledged adult. He's a young man who is trying to figure out his identity.
Taking place in 1973 in Encino, California, Licorice Pizza has a unique style and a brilliant score, and the story is very interesting. The movie has a lot of funny moments, but it's also filled with drama and a little romance. Anderson uses actors, hair, makeup, and costumes to create a sense of authenticity. One of the main characters is a racist restaurant owner played by John Michael Higgins. Even though Higgins speaks with a generic Asian accent, you can feel the time period from the soundtrack.
Licorice Pizza Blu-ray Review
Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza" movie will come out on Blu-ray and DVD starting May 17 2022. You'll find the film in a dual-layered disc with excellent video and audio presentation, and a fold-out poster inside the case. The film, a coming-of-age love story, received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, with Anderson personally nominated in all three categories. Now, let's review the video and audio of Licorice Pizza on Blu-ray.
Video of Licorice Pizza Blu-ray
The Blu-ray release of "Licorice Pizza" boasts a high-quality 1080p HD transfer that delivers vivid and bright visuals. The 1080p video presentation features an excellent color reproduction, with crisp, clear textural details. In addition, it has a clean, throwback aesthetic.
The film features a warm color palette, showcasing sunny amber tones and a 70s California landscape with rich earthy hues of orange, red, green, and blue. The interior scenes feature dark oak woods and red leather, with a variety of brown tones. The arcade and vendor convention scenes are particularly striking, with their abundance of neon signs featuring bright primary colors.
Audio of Licorice Pizza Blu-ray
The Licorice Pizza Blu-ray release includes an extremely robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track and also offers a lossless audio presentation. DTS-HD Master Audio is the audio codec of choice for many high-definition movies. For Blu-ray, the format supports transfer rates up to 24.5 Mbit/s. Those higher bit depths are correlated with better dynamic range and higher frequencies. Some players don't support both types of lossless audio.
Despite the fact that the Blu-ray release only has a 5.1 surround track, the film's music is quite satisfying. The ambient details in the rear channels are a highlight.
Unlike the Dolby TrueHD version on the Blu-ray, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track on the DVD is an authentic bit-to-bit copy of the master tapes. It's an ideal soundtrack for any HD movie fan.
